A tribute to Grandpa...
GRANDY

'Shruti, Shruti' - your husky, frailing voice still echoes in my ears
As I picture your once radiant, now wrinkled face and with moist eyes;
I try to reach out to you but in vain.
Everything I wrote was once scrutinized by you
And here I strain myself to sew some sensible words into this poem (and life)
But feel lost without you.
Imbibing the daily newspaper headlines was less boring
while you were around enlightening me, talking (actually gasping by the end)
like an encyclopedia.
There are no doors left to close to reduce the noise coming from the T.V.
as you have shut the door of your life and left us to dread an eerie silence-
And i imagine you whispering from above - 'Now what is to be done?',
just as you would time and again.
And yes you calculating your pension, taxes & recalculating & cross-checking & again &
then asking me to do it, joking - this is the only treasure I leave - & then again
why did you ever have to?
Teaching us A,B,C,Ds to ethics, taking care of dadi & overprotecting everyone,
stopping going out when you could to when -
there was no choice.
I miss it all - our banters (stories of your humble beginnings....) and bickerings
A quintessential disciplined life led on one's own terms with humility,
was of Grand(pa)y - may he rest in peace... 🙏
